Former General Hospital actor Johnny Wactor was shot and killed by thieves who tried to steal the catalytic converter from his car. He was 37.

The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Saturday in downtown Los Angeles (Saturday, 11am UK time) when Wactor drove his car towards three men, police said.

One of the three opened fire and Wactor later died in hospital.

The suspects drove away, but no arrests were made.

The actor had just left a nearby rooftop bar, said his mother Scarlett Wactor. When he saw the three at his car, he thought it was going to be towed because he had parked it in an unknown location on the street, she told Sky News’ US partner channel NBC News.

Wactor’s agent David Shaul said the actor was “a true moral role model for all who knew him.”

“Through the ups and downs of a demanding profession, he always kept his head up and continued to strive to do his best,” Mr Shaul said in a statement on Sunday.

“Our time with Johnny was a privilege we would wish on anyone. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. After more than a decade together, he will forever leave a hole in our hearts.”

He has also appeared in numerous films and television series, including “Station 19,” “NCIS,” “Westworld,” and the video game “Call of Duty: Vanguard.”

Scarlett Wactor said his son’s acting work can help her cope with her loss.

“I think when I see Johnny on the videos and recordings, I can only hope that he is in heaven doing this and enjoying it,” she said.

NBC News reports that thieves are targeting catalytic converters to steal valuable metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium.
