Wellness Fair Dedicated to Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes in Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

A wellness exhibit honoring Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was held Sunday at the Stone Mountain Atrium.

Lopes, a member of the Grammy Award-winning group TLC, was an advocate for health and wellness.

Lopes’ family spoke exclusively with Atlanta News First at the event.

“Most people know that Lisa visited Honduras, and Dr. Sebi and the village cleansed, and you know, just to reset, you know, reset your body,” said her sister, Reigndrop Lopes.

Lopes was killed in a car accident while overseas in 2002. She spoke openly about her mental health struggles and spiritual journey before her death.

The Lisa Lopes Foundation hosted the event which promoted health, wellness and community.

Lopes’ brother, Ron, is president of the foundation. He says this is the first year they have held this event.

“My sister is my biggest inspiration,” he said. “We did something in previous years – we just celebrated his life, but I felt like we weren’t doing justice to his legacy by not introducing the health and wellness component to it.”

Her sister says Lopes was very vocal about the role food plays in mental health.

“A lot of people don’t know that what you eat also affects your thoughts,” she said. “You can have a lot of anger, a lot of aggression, a lot of people don’t know that that can come from a lot of the antibiotics that they’re injecting into these animals.”

Monday marks what would have been Lopes’ 53rd birthday.

His family says the exhibit is a way for them to keep his vision alive.

“I once read in one of her writings after she passed away that she wrote, ‘I want to give back to the world what the world gave me,’” Ron said.
