May 26 (UPI) – At least 35 people were killed on Sunday in an attack by Israeli forces on the town of Rafah, where many Gaza residents have fled amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the Gaza Health Ministry said.

According to Gaza authorities, the attack hit a camp of precisely those people who had fled to the city to seek shelter.

Israeli forces said they killed two senior Hamas officials in the attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will continue to do whatever is necessary to defeat Hamas since the militant group’s surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed more than 1,200 people.

Netanyahu has ignored growing international pressure for a ceasefire or a cessation of military hostilities that have killed nearly 36,000 Gaza residents.

The response to the recent attack by Israeli forces was swift and comprehensive. Doctors Without Borders has expressed its outrage at the attack.

The attack “shows once again that nowhere is safe,” the group said in a statement.

“Dozens of injured and more than 15 dead were brought to the trauma stabilization point we supported,” it said.

The latest wave of violence began last October, but the Israeli-Palestinian conflict began in 1948 over a land dispute. Many of the problems remain the same today.
