MUMBAI: Police investigating the Sion Hospital accident that killed a 60-year-old woman from Mumbra suspect that Dr Rajesh Dere, head of the hospital’s forensic department, was either under the influence of alcohol or using his mobile phone when he allegedly ran her over. They claimed that Dere misled them by claiming that Rubaida Shaikh was found unconscious and informed the authorities about her death only 18 hours later, report S Ahmed Ali & Sumitra DebRoy.

Dere, who was arrested under sections 304-A, 338, 279 and 177 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), was produced before a court in Dadar and remanded in judicial custody. He was later granted bail of Rs 20,000.

Shaikh’s son Shahnawaz claimed on Sunday that the 18-hour delay was enough to remove traces of alcohol from Dere’s body. After the final ceremony, he expressed surprise that Dere had been released on bail.

“We are waiting for Dere’s blood test report and have asked the mobile operator for detailed call records to determine whether he was on the phone during the accident,” a source said.
