61-year-old suspect arrested in San Fernando Valley shooting after standoff; 5 injured

A 61-year-old man is in custody following a shooting that left five people hospitalized in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday night, authorities confirmed to KTLA.

The dangerous incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. after officers from the San Fernando Police Department responded to the 900 block of Orange Grove Avenue on reports that several people had been shot at a residence.


Police found four gunshot victims at the scene. A fifth victim, who took himself to the hospital, was later identified.

San Fernando resident Martin Rodriguez, believed to be responsible for the shooting, barricaded himself in his apartment and reportedly fired at the Los Angeles Police Department helicopter providing air support to officers on the ground during the skirmish with police.

Footage of the incident captured by KTLA showed a massive law enforcement presence from across the San Fernando Valley, as well as police dogs, SWAT teams and a BearCat armored vehicle on the scene.

Eventually, the 61-year-old was taken into custody without further incident.

Rodriguez was charged with seven counts of attempted murder, one count of criminal threats, one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and one count of shooting at an aircraft.

His bail was set at nearly $10 million.

The condition of the five victims injured in the incident was initially unclear. There were no reports of injuries to police officers.
