Houston Astros legend resigns from college baseball job after horrific run

Houston Astros legend and former first baseman Lance Berkman has resigned as head coach of the Houston Christian University baseball program.

Over the past three seasons, Berkman has led the program to a 47-104 record, a winning percentage of .311. It was far from a competitive ride for Berkman who had been in the coaching ranks at various levels prior to his tenure as HCU head coach.

“After some difficult consideration, I have decided to step down from my position as baseball coach at HCU,” Berkman said. “I have truly enjoyed working with the players, coaches and administrators at HCU. Unfortunately, I was not able to bring the baseball program the level of success I had hoped for, but I will always be grateful to HCU for this opportunity.”

We don’t know if it was the decision of Berkman, the athletic director or a mutual fund. However, HCU’s athletic director had some kind words about Berkman and his family.

“Coach Berkman met with me yesterday afternoon to let me know that he will not be returning to coach baseball next year,” athletic director Steve Moniaci said. “While we are saddened by this news, we wish Lance, Cara and their family all the best; and I know they will continue to be great supporters of HCU baseball and Houston Christian University.”

The New Braunfels, Texas, product retired from MLB in 2013 with the Texas Rangers after a 15-year career, including 12 with the Astros.

During his career, Berkman slashed .293/.406/.537 and averaged 32 home runs per season. He was part of Houston’s “Killer B’s” who led the franchise to four American League Central titles in the 1990s.
