New Age | CTG seaport and airport suspend all activities due to cyclone Remal

Due to Cyclone Remal, authorities in Chattogram suspended operations at Shah Amanat International Airport, seaport and Bangabandhu Tunnel on Sunday.

The Chittagong Port Authority asked all ships to move to their outer anchorages and immediately suspended all port activities after the Met Office advised them to raise Danger Signal 9 early Sunday.

Omar Faruk, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, said 13 ships had headed to the outer anchorage to head out to sea.

He said all loading and unloading activities of cargo and containers at the port piers would remain suspended even after Sunday morning.

Airport director Group Captain Taslim Ahmed said Shah Amanat International Airport had suspended all flight schedules and closed the runway at noon.

He said that all scheduled flights landed at the airport on time until 12:00.

The Bangabandhu Tunnel will remain closed until 6:00 am on Monday to avoid any untoward incident as a result of Cyclone Remal, Minister of State for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibur Rahman said after an inter-ministerial meeting in Dhaka.

The Chattogram District Disaster Management Authority evacuated hundreds of people to 785 cyclone centres, 1,140 schools and nine kellas.

They urged residents of vulnerable mountain areas to move to safer places due to the risk of landslides caused by the cyclone.
