Officer released from hospital after gunshot wound Friday, Baltimore police say – Baltimore Sun

A Baltimore police officer who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest during a fatal shootout with a man on Friday has been released from the hospital, the police department said.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. Friday as officers were investigating reports of a shooting from days earlier that left no injuries in the 3400 block of South Hanover Street in the Fairfield area, police said.

According to a press release from the state Attorney General’s Office, officers approached a man sitting on the porch of a commercial building and began questioning him.

While the officers continued their conversation with the man, police said he pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at them.

The man did not comply with the officers’ request to drop his weapon, according to the Attorney General’s Office. Several officers then fired shots at the man, the press release states.

According to police, the man was shot multiple times and an officer was hit in the chest, damaging his bulletproof vest.

The injured officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and his condition was listed as stable Friday evening. Police said Sunday that the officer has since been released from the hospital, but the BPD did not provide further details on his recovery.

The shooting is currently being investigated by city police and the Division of Independent Investigations of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.
