Update: Oakley Police: DNA leads to arrest in 20-year-old rape case

In April 2002, a young woman was sexually assaulted while walking her dog near Laurel Road in Oakley. The young woman was approached by a man who got out of a vehicle, pointed a gun at her, ordered her into the back seat of the vehicle, and ordered her to perform several sexual acts at gunpoint. At some point, the young woman escaped.

The teenager went to a nearby house to get help and the police were called. As part of the investigation protocol, DNA was collected and analyzed. In 2022, a CODIS hit alerted the Oakley Police Department about a possible DNA match from the sexual assault case in 2002.

On May 16, 2024 at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, the Coeur d’Alene Police and US Marshals Service (USMS) arrested Eric J. Fergusona 49-year-old man from Rathdrum, Idaho, in the case.– see report
