Sergio Perez escaped unharmed after a serious accident on the crazy first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Mexican, who started from 16th place, was touched by Kevin Magnussen’s Haas on the uphill after the first corner, Sainte Devote. The Dane’s left front axle hit Perez’s right rear axle, sending the latter into the barriers.

Perez then collided with the other Haas of Nico Hülkenberg in a dramatic pinball action, resulting in the red flag being waved while the debris was cleared away.

Perez’s Red Bull was almost destroyed and only had one wheel left on the car, but the monocoque protected the driver from physical damage.

Everyone was able to get out without any visible injuries.

A crazy start saw the two Alpines tangled, sending Esteban Ocon flying at the entrance to the tunnel. He landed safely and was able to continue the race until it was stopped.

Carlos Sainz, driving for Ferrari in third place, stopped at Casino Square after apparently driving too low.

Before the interruption, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was leading from pole position, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in second.
