Six injured and at least one Iraqi fighter killed in explosion north of Baghdad

At least one Iraqi Sunni fighter was killed and at least six others injured by an explosive device at a checkpoint in Khan Beni Saad, about 50 kilometers north of Baghdad, security officials said on Sunday.

According to the Iraqi Security Media Cell, an official body responsible for providing security information and updates to the public and the media, two separate bombs were detonated at the checkpoint on Saturday evening.

The organization initially reported on the attack, claiming that only one person had died and four others had suffered minor injuries.

There are currently competing reports from various medical and security sources regarding the number of victims and the exact nature of the attack.

Three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that the explosion killed five Iraqi soldiers and two fighters from the Sahwa, a Sunni tribal militia allied with the government in Baghdad. According to reports, a civilian who was not a combatant was also killed in the explosion.

As of Sunday, no internal or external actor had claimed responsibility for the attack.
