Former Sacramento police chief chosen to lead campus security at UCLA

The university’s chancellor, Gene D. Block, said changes were made to campus security because recent events affected the community’s sense of security.

Students and community members set up camps at universities, including UCLA, to call on schools to withdraw from Israel as the war in Gaza continues. The Associated Press reports more than 2,400 arrests at 46 campuses across the country related to the antiwar protests.

Block said he also created a formal advisory group, including the UC Davis police chief, to work with Braziel on their security and emergency management operations.

“The well-being of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. These measures are essential to creating a safe environment in which everyone at UCLA can confidently pursue their studies and careers,” Block said Monday.

Braziel served as Sacramento police chief for five years before retiring in 2012.
