ALARM DAY: Rain, some storms today

• Rain is coming this morning
• Some heavy thunderstorms possible this afternoon
• Isolated storms on Memorial Day

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Today is a First Alert Day, as the weather is likely to significantly impact your holiday weekend plans. While the threat of severe storms is significantly lower than earlier in the week, there is still a chance that a few storms this afternoon could bring gusty winds and small hail.

There will also be periods of heavy rainfall, which could pose a slight risk of flooding in areas along rivers and streams where water levels are already high due to last week’s rains.

What’s next …

Rain will move in from the west this morning and will become widespread between 10 and 11 a.m. There will be a few thunderstorms within this rain line, but no severe weather is expected in the morning. As the widespread rain moves eastward in the afternoon, we can expect isolated thunderstorms across southern Wisconsin. Some of these storms may bring hail or gusty winds.

If you plan to be outdoors today, make sure you have shelter indoors in case a thunderstorm approaches near you.

It will be drier this evening and cloudy but dry overnight. Temperatures will drop to around 13 degrees early Monday morning. Monday morning looks dry, perhaps even with a bit of sunshine at times. We can expect a few isolated thunderstorms to develop in the late afternoon/early evening, but I expect some areas to remain completely dry throughout the day. Highs will be around 21 degrees.

Looking ahead…

There is still a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday, with highs around 15 degrees, before it finally stays dry for the rest of the week. On Wednesday and Thursday the sun returns and temperatures rise. Thursday or Friday look to be the best days of the week, with warm temperatures and no rain.
