Accident in Washington sheds light on the problems of public transport

On June 22, nine people were killed and dozens injured when two trains collided in Washington’s subway system. It was the worst accident in 33 years on the system, which serves the District of Columbia and neighboring suburbs in Maryland and Virginia.

The tragedy raises further questions about the financing and safety of public transport, and the cause remains under investigation. The Baltimore Sun reported that the train that caused the accident had some of the oldest cars in the metro fleet. A computer error is being investigated as the cause.
