Shots fired during Georgetown County inmate’s escape attempt

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – South Carolina law enforcement has been tasked with investigating after a gun was fired during an inmate’s escape attempt in Georgetown County.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jason Lesley, an inmate in a transport unit at the Georgetown County Detention Center attempted to snatch a police officer’s firearm on Saturday.

The officer attempted to stop the inmate with a taser, but when that didn’t work, he fired his service weapon.

The prisoner was not hit by gunfire, Lesley said.

Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver has asked SLED to investigate the incident.

The prisoner is in custody pending trial.

The name of the inmate has not yet been released.
