LP declares Abure’s suspension illegal

The The Labour Party’s National Working Committee on Saturday criticised the suspension of the party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, on the grounds that the party’s Edo State chapter had no legal standing to take such action without invoking its constitution.

The controversial national chairman, who is still at loggerheads with the Nigerian Labour Congress over a plot to hijack the party, has been suspended from his Arue-Uromi area of Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State for alleged arrogance and anti-party activities.

According to the suspension letter dated May 14, 2024 and another ratification letter dated May 15, 2024, which were ratified at a meeting of the State Executive Committee in Benin on Friday, Abure’s suspension is effective immediately.

The party’s state association then advised Abure to stop pretending to be a party member or to stop showing off.

The party’s state executive committee, led by Kelly Ogbaloi, also reportedly approved the decisions of the party’s district and local government committee on Friday.

Efforts to get Abure to comment on his alleged suspension and allegations of anti-party activities were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report as both his lines have been disconnected.

However, in a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, the LP’s national spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, described Abure’s alleged suspension as illegal and unconstitutional.
