Suspect arrested in Bridgeport TD Bank robbery: Police

Eion Powell, 28, faces several charges for the alleged crime.

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – Bridgeport police have named a suspect in the armed robbery of the TD Bank branch at 1000 Lafayette Boulevard on Thursday.

Eion Powell, 28, of Bridgeport, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree robbery, use of a firearm, second-degree menacing, obstructing an officer and destruction/tampering with evidence, according to police.

At around 4:20 p.m. Thursday, the Bridgeport Emergency Communications Center received a panic alarm from the TD Bank at 1000 Lafayette Boulevard, police said, noting that they quickly confirmed that an armed robbery had occurred.

According to police, Bridgeport patrol officers responded to the bank and searched the area while a description of the suspect was obtained and broadcast on the radio. Police said they were aware that the suspect may have been on foot in the area of ​​Highland Avenue and Washington Avenue.

Officers in the area found a suspect matching the description at 98 Highland Avenue in the Charles F. Greene Homes Apartments between buildings 4 and 5, police said. Officers located the suspect, who was sitting on the ground. He threw a black object under a nearby car, which police found to be a replica handgun consistent with a Beretta Model 92 pistol, police said.

Police said a witness positively identified the suspect as Powell. A backpack containing $1,350 was found, counted by the bank manager and returned to the bank.

In the booking area, police said a note was found on Powell. He attempted to destroy the note and claimed it was a love letter. However, police said this was consistent with witness statements regarding the note being shown during the robbery.

Powell’s bail was set at $100,000, police said.
