23-year-old Good Samaritan dies in hit-and-run after attempting to help in fatal crash on I-10 – 104.5 WOKV

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that a Good Samaritan was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning.

The incident began when a 31-year-old man hit the guardrail at McDuff Avenue on I-10 East around 2:00 a.m., causing his car to roll over. In a heroic attempt to help, 23-year-old Gavin Carter pulled over to the side of the road.

As Carter approached the overturned vehicle, he was struck and killed by a passing sedan. The driver of the sedan reportedly fled the scene on foot.

Carter’s grandmother spoke to Action News Jax and revealed that he was on his way home with his fiancée of six years and the two were in the car during the incident.

She added that they raised him to be a person with a good soul.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account in Carter’s memory.

The suspect is still at large. The family is urging the driver to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
