Former Jackson County Auditor Arrested by Indiana State Police

JACKSON COUNTY, Ind. – A former Jackson County auditor was arrested by Indiana State Police Friday.

According to a press release, 44-year-old Staci Eglen of Seymour now faces numerous charges of fraud, abuse of office and theft. Her arrest came immediately after a months-long investigation by the Indiana State Police.

The ISP investigation began when the State Board of Accounts discovered potentially fraudulent activity by Eglen.

During their investigation, State Police discovered that Eglen had forged at least two checks issued to her by the Jackson County Tax Collector’s Office. Eglen was supposed to use the checks for professional purposes as an employee of the Hamilton Township Tax Collector’s Office.

ISP reported that Eglen deposited the checks into her personal account, received cash in return, and then used the money to make personal purchases. Police believe Eglen illegally stole more than $18,000 from the county.

According to a press release, Eglen has been preliminarily charged with four counts of abuse of office, four counts of theft and two counts of fraud.

All of the charges against Eglen are Level 6 felonies. The maximum penalty for a Level 6 felony in Indiana is 2.5 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

ISP stated that Eglen resigned from her position as Jackson County auditor shortly after state authorities began investigating her fraudulent activities. After her arrest by police, she was detained in the Jackson County Jail.

According to Jackson County Jail records, Eglen’s bail was set at $1,505.
