Meteorological agency warns of possible severe storms on Sunday afternoon | Weather

A weather warning from the Met Office remains in effect for Sunday, predicting the risk of severe thunderstorms from Sunday morning into the evening hours. All hazards are possible, including damaging winds, very large hail and tornadoes.

We’ll see a very warm to hot day Sunday afternoon, with highs in the 90s and rising humidity. Before: A strong layer of warm air will move through late morning and early afternoon. This will rapidly destabilize the atmosphere and increase wind shear, creating a favorable environment for storm development during the afternoon and evening. A cold front will move through late tonight, ending the severe threat before sunrise Monday. All dangers are possible, including damaging winds, very large hail, and tornadoes. Some of the larger hailstones could reach up to 2 inches in diameter, and given the highly unstable environment, a strong tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Destructive winds over 60 mph from bending segments also cannot be ruled out.

With a busy holiday weekend approaching, anyone planning outdoor activities should keep a close eye on the weather forecast. Make sure you get reliable alerts when you’re outdoors, and know where to seek shelter if storms threaten your area. Download the free WPSD Radar app to get alerts wherever you are. If you’re headed to the lake or campground, keep a NOAA Weather Radio handy for a second reliable way to get alerts.

Also remember: If you hear thunder, you are close enough for lightning to strike. If a thunderstorm is approaching, get to a stable shelter and stay indoors for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.
