Police release update on ongoing murder investigation after stabbing on beach

Dorset Police have taken steps to reassure the public as investigations into a murder continue following the stabbing of a woman on a Bournemouth beach.

A 17-year-old boy from the Lancashire area remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 34-year-old Poole woman.

The woman’s death was pronounced at the scene after police received a report that two people had been stabbed on Durley Chine beach at 11.42pm on Friday 24 May.

A 38-year-old woman from Poole was taken to hospital with serious injuries where she continues to receive treatment.

The police tried to reassure the public by “quickly” investigating the entire circumstances of the woman’s death.

Detective Superintendent Richard Dixey, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Since we received the report of this tragic incident in which one woman lost her life and another woman was seriously injured, our detectives – supported by many colleagues from across the organisation – have worked tirelessly to progress the investigation.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims, who are being supported by professionals during this incredibly difficult time.

“We recognize the impact this incident is having on our communities and are aware of the speculation already surfacing online about the possible circumstances.

“It is important to stress that our investigation is still at a very early stage and it is unhelpful to speculate as to why this tragedy occurred, particularly as an arrest has already been made. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”

Detective Superintendent Dixey continued: “I would like to reassure our communities in Dorset, as well as the many people visiting our county over the bank holiday weekend, that we are exploring all available investigative lines to establish the motives behind this horrific incident.

“We understand the concerns the public have as a result of this incident. There will be an increased police presence in the area and we are also working closely with our partner agencies and community groups to address the issue. If you are in the area and have any concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to an officer.

“I would like to take this opportunity to renew my appeal to anyone who has information and has not yet spoken to officers to please get in touch. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was near Durley Chine beach between 10pm on Friday 24 May 2024 and midnight and noticed anything unusual. Information can be uploaded to this case via our dedicated major events public portal.”
