PAPINEAUVILLE – Alcohol and speed may have been factors in a crash that left one person dead and four seriously injured in Papineauville, Outaouais, on Saturday.

Emergency services were notified of the incident at approximately 3:15 a.m., which occurred on Highway 50 at kilometer 207.

“It was a single vehicle with five passengers, traveling at high speed according to witnesses. The driver lost control and hit the guardrail before overturning,” said Sergeant Stéphane Tremblay, a spokesman for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

“The driver was thrown from the vehicle and his death was pronounced at the hospital that night,” she said.

The victim is a 22-year-old man from Longueuil. His four passengers suffered serious injuries, but their lives are not in danger.

“The other occupants of the vehicle are all young people in their early 20s,” Tremblay said.

Highway 50 eastbound in this area has been closed to traffic indefinitely to allow SQ investigators to examine the scene.

“We already know that alcohol and speed may have played a role in this collision,” Tremblay said.

The SQ investigation is ongoing.
