Two arrests after bushfire caused by illegal fireworks in Battlement Mesa

Two people were arrested Friday on numerous charges for causing a brush fire while setting off illegal fireworks, according to a news release from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders arrived at the scene of a 1-acre brush fire in the Lodgepole Circle area of ​​Battlement Mesa around noon.

“The fire destroyed fences and several homes were in danger,” the press release said. “Officers and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire.”



Upon investigation, officers determined that the fire was caused by illegal fireworks. During the search, they found illegal fireworks and nearly 17 grams of methamphetamine.

“Two individuals were arrested on multiple charges, including fourth-degree arson and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance,” the press release said.



The SPEAR Task Force, Parachute Police Department, Grand Valley Fire Protection District, Colorado River Fire Rescue and Garfield County Emergency Communication Authority assisted Garfield County Sheriff’s Office officials.

The sheriff’s office reminds in its press release that fireworks that are illegal under state law are also illegal on private property. Illegal fireworks include firecrackers, any type of firework that is launched into the air, and others, “unless you are a licensed professional with a valid permit.”

Fireworks are generally prohibited in the state, the press release continues.
