New Haven man sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexual assault and endangerment of minors

A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sexual assault and endangering minors, officials said.

Carlos Gomez, 69, of New Haven, was sentenced Friday in New Haven Superior Court. His prison sentence was followed by 10 years of sex offender probation, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Haven.

The verdict came after a New Haven jury found the defendant guilty on March 1 of five counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of endangering a minor. The victims and their families were present and spoke at the sentencing on Friday.

Evidence at trial showed that Gomez sexually abused two children under the age of 10 in New Haven between 2007 and 2012. The two cases were consolidated into a single trial before a jury in New Haven Superior Court, officials said.

The cases were investigated by the New Haven Police Department. The Department of Children and Families and the Yale-New Haven Hospital Child Abuse Clinic assisted in the case.
