Three University of Washington student organizations temporarily suspended – The Badger Herald

The University of Wisconsin on Thursday announced the status of two registered student organizations following their involvement in the Library Mall encampment, including a possible violation of student organization rules, according to a press release from the UW.

The Young Democratic Socialists of America (UW-Madison) faces a provisional suspension pending a full investigation by the Committee on Student Organizations, while Students for Justice in Palestine only faces an investigation by the CSO, the press release states.

While the temporary suspension limits the number of board meetings to one per week, it will not have a significant impact on the organization, said Gabo Raul Ochoa Samoff, co-chair of YDSA UW-Madison.

“The provisional suspension limits our organizational capacity to one board meeting per week,” said Samoff. “However, we have not met often due to school holidays, so I would say the impact is not particularly severe.”

YDSA does not currently have a firm plan for the disciplinary process, but the organization expects the provisional suspension to be lifted, Samoff said.

Two other UW RSOs are currently facing provisional suspension pending investigation for alleged discriminatory behavior, according to a UW press release from 6 May.

During a chalk event co-hosted by Mecha de UW Madison and Anticolonial Scientists at the Dane County Farmer’s Market on May 4, individuals reported chalk drawings to the CSO that advocated violence, terrorist organizations and anti-Semitic comments. The CSO has provisionally suspended both RSOs pending an investigation, the press release states.

All organizations have been informed of their provisional suspensions and investigations, the newsletter said.
