Hot, humid and ‘feels’ like triple digit weather in Houston today

Today’s forecast:

It’s HOT this weekend. In fact, at 7 a.m. we will be in the 80s and at 1 p.m. we will be in the 90s. The average temperature right now is 89 – so not only are we above average in terms of temperatures, but it’s really the humidity that makes this weekend a concern.

Heat warnings this holiday weekend:

The reason for this oppressive heat is a dome of high pressure over southern Mexico. We are at the edge of this anticyclone. This does two things. First, it keeps the severe weather north of us and second, it gives us a lot of heat. Temperatures climb into the mid-90s this weekend, with the hottest day of the year expected on Sunday and Memorial Day Monday. In fact, Monday could set or tie a record 96° from 2004. And the humidity continues to rise, too. The heat index for Sunday and Monday will be between 106° and 110°. Heat warnings go into effect when the heat index exceeds 108° and that’s where we’ll be this weekend. Be careful, these are records that look like numbers for the month of May.
