Another crisis in the Labour Party: Abure suspended for ‘anti-party activities’ – The Whistler Newspaper

…suspension illegal – party spokesman

The Labour Party (LP) is spiralling from one crisis to the next after the party’s Edo State chapter suspended controversial party leader Julius Abure for alleged anti-party activities.

Abure, who has been fighting to retain his position for several years, was suspended again with a suspension letter dated May 14, 2024.

To enforce his suspension, another letter of ratification dated May 15, 2024 was ratified at a meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) in Benin on Friday evening.

The letter announced that Abure, who had retained his position as chairman against all odds, was suspended with immediate effect.

The letters revealed that Abure had been expelled from the party in Arue-Uromi Ward 3 in the northeastern Esan Local Government Area of Edo State for alleged “arrogance and anti-party activities”.

The executives said they made the decision because of Abure’s “arrogance and anti-party activities in the party administration as well as countless other fraud allegations made against you which are (currently) under investigation.”

The letters further state: “Even though the suspension takes effect immediately, you are advised not to impersonate or display yourself as a member of the Labour Party, Ward 3, Arue, Uromi in Ean North-East LGA, Edo State.”

While the letter of suspension was signed by the District Chairman, Thompson Ehiguese and the District Secretary, Stanley Usiomoh, the letter confirming his suspension was forwarded to the State Executive Committee of the party by the party’s Esan North-East Local Government Chairman, Patrick Onogbeni, and the District Secretary, Ehikioya Eromosele, through the State Chairman.

“The LGA Board met today, May 15, 2024, at approximately 12 noon to discuss the issues raised in connection with the suspension and accordingly found them to be significant and confirmed the suspension,” the letter said.

It said: “The national executive committee reviewed the letters and the issues contained therein and approved the suspension of Abure.

“With the confirmation of his suspension, the basis of his party leadership at the national level has been undermined and the consequence is that he is suspended as national chairman of the party.”

But Workers’ Party spokesman Obiora Ifoh reacted immediately and told journalists that the tension was illegal.

He stressed: “The county, the LG or even the state have no power to suspend the national chairman. A high court in Edo has also ruled on this matter. An appeal court has also ruled on this matter.”

“This attack is a continuation of the attacks on Abure that we saw during the governorship primaries. This too will not achieve anything and we are not worried,” Ifoh said.
