Police officer shot, suspect dies in south Baltimore

A Baltimore police detective was injured and a suspect died in a shooting Friday night. Baltimore Police Chief Richard Worley said the detective was shot around 10:25 p.m. Friday in the 3400 block of South Hanover Street in Brooklyn. Police said several officers were investigating a call from several days ago “in which an individual fired multiple shots at victims.” “No one was hit on that call, but (officers) were speaking to an individual here who we believed was the suspect in the case,” Worley said. Police said officers were speaking to the individual, who was sitting on a stoop, when he quickly stood up, drew a gun and gunfire ensued. “We don’t know who fired first,” Worley said. “(The suspect) had many opportunities to drop the weapon, he could have cooperated, but he chose not to. He aimed at our officers and the officers fired, our officers did exactly what they’re trained to do.” Police confirm the officer shot was a detective and that he was shot in the chest, but his body armor saved his life. Worley said they expect the detective to be able to leave the hospital. The officers involved will be placed on 10-day leave as per protocol, and footage from their body-worn cameras will be reviewed. Police said at least three officers were involved in the shooting. “We are extremely thankful and happy that our officer was not seriously injured in this incident,” Mayor Brandon Scott said. “We want to thank him and his colleagues for doing exactly what they were supposed to do. There has been a lot of talk about whether our police officers are focusing on what they should be focusing on. That’s what they should have been focused on and they did their job tonight and put themselves in harm’s way because we’re going to continue to focus on people who recklessly use illegal handguns and shoot people and we’re not going to allow that to be tolerated. We’re very grateful to the officers for investigating an incident where multiple people could have been shot.” An 11 News team on the scene discovered at least eight crime scene markers on the ground in a very large cordoned off area. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office was on scene working with Baltimore Police. They will release the names of the suspect and officers involved in the coming days, barring any safety concerns. No further information has been released.

A Baltimore police detective was injured and a suspect died in a shooting Friday night.

Baltimore Police Chief Richard Worley said the officer was shot around 10:25 p.m. Friday in the 3400 block of South Hanover Street in Brooklyn.

According to police, several officers were investigating a call from a few days ago “in which an individual fired multiple shots at victims.”

“No one was hit during the operation, but (officers) spoke with a person here who we believed was the suspect,” Worley said.

According to police, officers were talking to the person, who was sitting on a staircase, when he suddenly stood up, pulled out a gun and a gunfire ensued.

“We don’t know who fired first,” Worley said. “(The suspect) had many opportunities to drop the weapon. He could have cooperated, but he wouldn’t. He aimed at our officers and they fired. Our officers did exactly what they’re trained to do.”

Police confirmed that the officer shot was a detective and that he was shot in the chest, but his body armor saved his life. Worley said they expect the detective to be released from the hospital soon.

The officers involved have been placed on 10-day leave, as per protocol, and their body camera footage is being reviewed. Police said at least three officers were involved in the shooting.

“We are extremely grateful and happy that our officer was not seriously injured in this incident,” said Mayor Brandon Scott. “We want to thank him and his colleagues for doing exactly what they were supposed to do. There has been a lot of talk about whether our officers are focused on what they should be focused on. That’s what they should have been focused on and they did their jobs tonight and put themselves in harm’s way because we will continue to focus on people who recklessly use illegal handguns and shoot people and we will not allow that to be tolerated. We are very grateful to the officers for following up on an incident where multiple people could have been shot.”

An 11 News crew on scene discovered at least eight evidence markers on the ground in a very large cordoned off area.
