Local parolee with long criminal record arrested for theft

A parolee with a long criminal history was arrested Wednesday on warrants related to the alleged theft of a mobile home in 2022 and a box truck last month.

David Shane Goings, 54, of 1616 Sleepy Valley Road, was arrested at his residence around 11:00 a.m. on warrants for theft over $25,000 (punishable by up to 20 years in prison) and theft over $1,000 (punishable by up to six years), along with an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance, punishable by up to 20 years.

Goings was later released on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Garland County District Court on June 21.

According to court records, Goings was convicted of receiving stolen goods on June 2, 1997, and sentenced to three years’ probation; on December 30, 1997, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for drug charges; in 2006, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for drug charges, all sentences suspended; in 2014, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison for commercial burglary and five counts of residential burglary, but was later paroled; and on May 30, 2023, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison for possession of meth with intent to resell, all sentences suspended; he has a pending meth possession charge since a January 6 arrest.

According to the theft over $25,000 affidavit, a local man reported his 2017 Keystone Passport camper, valued at $26,000, stolen on October 15, 2022.

On Wednesday, Garland County Sheriff’s investigators executed a search warrant at Goings’ residence and took him into custody. Goings reportedly spontaneously stated that the camper he was in and everything associated with it belonged to him. A check of the vehicle identification number confirmed that the camper was the one reported stolen in 2022.

According to the affidavit for the second arrest warrant, on April 19, a man reported the theft of a box truck containing various tools valued at over $33,000. On May 7, a friend of the victim, who had been actively searching for the truck, called 911 and reported finding the box from the truck at 1616 Sleepy Valley.

The victim arrived at the scene and reportedly confirmed that the box, valued at $4,300, was the one that had been tied to the truck. Goings, who was at the scene, told investigators he purchased the box from a known suspect on True Grit Lane.

Investigators later found the truck on True Grit Lane and the man there claimed he had purchased it from an unknown person. When asked about the items that were in the truck, the man claimed he only had the tailgate, which investigators secured. A warrant was later issued for Goings’ arrest for possession of the stolen box.
