Houston pools open Memorial Day weekend

A shortage of lifeguards and destruction caused by last week’s Derecho storm is being blamed for the delay in most Houston pools opening this summer.

HOUSTON – It’s going to be hot and sticky in Houston this Memorial Day weekend, so a dip in a nice cool pool will seem tempting.

However, there won’t be many Houston city pools to choose from.

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department announced Friday that only six of the city’s 38 pools would open this weekend. They blame the destruction caused by last week’s storms and a lack of rescuers.

“We look forward to providing Houstonians with a safe place to cool off during the summer. At the same time, our priority is to ensure their safety when visiting our pools,” said HPARD Director Kenneth Allen.
