New video shows moments leading up to a fatal crash involving a Milwaukee police cruiser

It’s been two months since an 11-year-old boy and his grandmother died in a crash at the intersection of Sherman Boulevard and Villard Avenue. New police video shows the deadly chain of events that ended in the violent crash involving a Milwaukee police cruiser March 5: A silver Infiniti ran a red light, struck another car, spun into a third car and crashed into the patrol car. According to investigators, the driver sped away from officers from the Milwaukee Police District Four less than an hour before the accident. According to the criminal complaint, Davonte Jackson was sitting in the passenger seat of the silver Infiniti outside the police station. Investigators say the driver met with a probation officer inside. Officers looked at the car and then Jackson jumped into the driver’s seat, according to prosecutors. Video from an officer’s body-worn camera shows the moments he approaches the car. Jackson rolled down the window and officers opened the driver and passenger doors. “I’ll let you get out of the car. You’re not in trouble, man. OK? Don’t make it worse than it is,” an official said. Jackson speeds away and the officers run back to the patrol car and begin pursuing his car. The complaint said he reached speeds of 70 miles per hour while weaving through traffic. The officers lost sight of Jackson and broke off the pursuit. Less than an hour later, officers from another Milwaukee patrol car were at a stoplight at Sherman and Villard and spotted the silver car. The video shows the car running the red light and crashing into one car, causing it to flip into a third car. Debris hit the police car. Eleven-year-old Ashton Porter and his grandmother, 55-year-old Janice Howard, were in the upturned SUV. Both died from their injuries. The video shows police jumping out of the car and one trying to attack Jackson. According to the complaint, the officer slipped on vehicle fluids and missed Jackson. Jackson was later arrested near the scene of the accident. Jackson faces eight charges, including hit-and-run resulting in death and second-degree manslaughter. According to the criminal complaint, he admitted to investigators that he never had a driver’s license. He is currently in jail on a $500,000 bond.
