A Keauhou man has been formally charged with abuse after an incident led to the temporary closure of a section of Kuakini Highway on Wednesday evening.

Timothy-John Reilly, 33, was formally charged this morning with abuse of a family or household member in the presence of a minor and remains in custody on $5,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Kona District Court today.

The charges against Reilly stem from an incident reported around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday when Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the area of the 77-6000 block of Kuakini Highway. A 22-year-old woman reported being pushed into a wall by her boyfriend.

When Hawaii Island Police arrived at the scene, they found the suspect, later identified as Reilly, inside his residence with what appeared to be a rifle slung over his shoulder.

Reilly was cooperative in communicating with officers and did not threaten them with the firearm, although a lockdown was observed and a portion of Kuakini Highway between Kamehameha III Road and La’aloa Avenue was temporarily closed to ensure the safety of the community. Officers assisted Reilly’s friend and her toddler to exit the home without further incident.

Thomas John “TJ” Reilly was subsequently arrested and taken to the West Hawai’i Detention Center pending processing.

Detectives from the Juvenile Services Division of Area II were contacted to continue this investigation.
