HAMBURG, New York — Poets and pirates (Spring goal-Kandy’s Lo) collected the “loot” for the second week in a row at Buffalo Speedway as he bowed out of Stars An Stones’ late charge in the $9,000 Class B harness trotting event on Friday afternoon (May 24). Starting from the rail after notching a convincing five-length victory in the same ranking last week, Poets N Pirates (Jim Morrill Jr.) allowed Stars An Stones (Joseph Chindano Jr.) to take an early lead but quickly managed to regain the upper hand. .

With fractions of:30.1, 1:01.1 and 1:31.3. Poets N Pirates’ main concern down the lane only seemed to be Stars An Stones, sitting in the pocket. Those concerns came to fruition late on when Stars An Stones made a valiant effort approaching the finish line, but only missed by a neck. Hellrider (David McNeight III) has taken the show job.

Owned by Michael Torcello and trained by Samuel Smith, it was the third victory in 16 starts this season for the 6-year-old Poets N Pirates gelding. The win brought his 2024 earnings to $26,684 and $187,808 lifetime. He paid $2.20 to win.

The second week of the Spring Up Series continued with once again non-winning $12,500 trotters ($15,000 mares) having at least 10 starts during the year. In the top division at $11,000, Heavens Fury (Muscular mass) was victorious as John Cummings Jr. guided the 4-year-old mare to a length victory over Gemini Eddie in 1:59.2. She paid $8.80 to win.

This was an incredible effort from Caviar’s Yankee (Triumphant caviar) in the second division as the 6 year old gelding covered the entire mile but still managed to beat Retha Babe by a head in 1:59.2. Piloted by Morrill Jr., it was the second consecutive Spring Up Series triumph for Caviar’s Yankee. He paid $7.50 to win.

It was a great afternoon for Morrill Jr. as he brought home four winners while Cummings Jr. doubled. Trainer Andrew Torre has two victories in training.

Racing will resume Saturday evening at 6 p.m. with a program of 11 races.
