Houston Astros GM says there’s no timetable for former MVP’s return to big leagues

According to Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown, former MVP Jose Abreu is doing “very well” in the minor leagues, but there is still no timetable for his return to the big club.

According to Chandler Rome of “The Athletic”.

Astros manager Joe Espada said there is “no timetable” for Jose Abreu’s return to the major league team, but Espada said Abreu is “doing very well” at West Palm Beach.

Abreu, 37, was hitting just .099 with no homers and three RBIs before being sent to Florida to work on his timing. He has yet to play in a minor league game, but will likely be promoted to continue his rehabilitation mission when the time comes.

Abreu signed a three-year contract before the 2023 season and hit .237 last season with 18 home runs. Although he started slowly and questions about his success surfaced last season, he bounced back to have 90 RBIs and help the Astros get to the ALCS again.

However, with the slow start and this demotion, questions about his abilities were once again raised.

One of the best right-handed hitters of the last decade, Abreu is in his 11th year of Major League career after arriving from Cuba. He is a lifetime .284 hitter with the White Sox and Astros winning MVPs in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He led baseball in RBI that year when he had 60 RBIs in just 60 games. He’s hit 30 or more home runs in five of his nine full major league seasons (not counting the COVID season and this season). He was also named an All-Star three times.
