91 Freeway closed due to SWAT standoff in Anaheim Hills – NBC Los Angeles

The 91 Freeway was closed in Orange County Friday morning due to an hours-long, fatal standoff that caused traffic to back up in both directions.

The standoff in the Anaheim Hills area began after an armed driver involved in a chase that began in Corona stopped on the highway. Details on what sparked the chase were not available.

The highway was closed on both sides at Imperial Highway and Lakeview Avenue.

Armored SWAT vehicles arrived at the scene where the blue sedan had stopped in the middle lane. The car, which appeared to have a hole in the rear driver’s window, was wedged between the two armored police vehicles.

The conflict ended around midday when officers pulled the motionless driver out of the car. He died at the scene of the accident. Details of the cause of death were not immediately known.

During the lengthy closure, drivers and passengers exited their cars, which were parked behind about a dozen police vehicles. Video showed a witness rolling into the carpool lane on a skateboard.

Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions and on adjacent roads. Some drivers turned around to take the next motorway exit.

The eastbound lanes reopened around 12:45 p.m. The westbound lanes remained closed early Friday afternoon.
