North Texas police increase patrols during busy Memorial Day weekend – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

This Memorial Day weekend will be a busy weekend for police across North Texas.

From the lakes to the streets, you can expect a stronger police presence as you enjoy the holiday weekend.

Dallas police have already increased patrols across the city this week. They are in full Click It Or Ticket mode, a Texas Department of Transportation campaign in which police actively search for drivers who are not wearing seat belts.

Violations can be punished with a hefty fine of $200.

The police are also actively searching for drunk drivers.

While increased enforcement of drunk driving is in place throughout the city, the focus areas in Dallas are the busy Trinity Groves, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts District, Downtown Dallas and Uptown Dallas.

“If you’ve been drinking and you feel like you can’t drive, call an Uber. Call someone to pick you up. Call a family friend. It’s not worth getting arrested,” said Sr. Cpl. Brian Martinez of the Dallas Police Department. “It’s not worth risking maybe your own life or someone else’s.”

In the fall, a new law went into effect in Texas that requires a person convicted of manslaughter while intoxicated to pay child support if he or she kills a parent with young children.

In the meantime, Fort Worth police will increase patrols in busy areas like West 7.th Street District, Downtown Fort Worth and the Stockyards.

In fact, Stockyards officers are conducting a crime-fighting initiative for the summer, complete with patrol cars and officers on foot.

The Police Department also recently presented a plan for West 7 to the Fort Worth City Council.th District, including the installation of retractable metal barriers, improved lighting, a new Safety Ambassador program and new security cameras.

These new features will be implemented at a later date, but here’s what you’ll see this weekend:

“There will already be security measures in place in all of our densely populated areas. We will be deploying our task forces, our gang forces and all of our special forces to help patrol. (They will) already be on site or near these more densely populated areas,” said Officer Buddy Calzada of the Fort Worth Police Department.

Calzada said police will also rely on good citizens to serve as eyes and ears this weekend.

“The most important thing is that we in the community can rely on them just as much. If you see something, speak up. Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone, call 911 and report any illegal activity you see here in Fort Worth,” Calzada said.
