The daughter and son-in-law of a Republican politician are among three Americans killed by gangs in Haiti.

Davy and Natalie Lloyd, a missionary couple in the country, were shot dead in the capital Port-au-Prince after they were ambushed as they left a youth group event at a local church, a police official said.

Their identities were confirmed in a Facebook post by Ms. Lloyd’s father, Missouri State Representative Ben Baker.

A third person, whose name has not yet been released, was also killed in the attack on Thursday evening in the municipality of Lizon in the north of Port-au-Prince, Lionel Lazarre, head of a Haitian police union, told the Associated Press on Friday.

“My heart is shattered into a thousand pieces. I have never felt such pain,” Baker wrote.

“Most of you know that my daughter and son-in-law, Davy and Natalie Lloyd, are full-time missionaries in Haiti.

“They were attacked by gangs tonight and both killed. They went to heaven together.

“Please pray for my family, we desperately need strength. And please pray for the Lloyd family too. I’m at a loss for words right now.”

The couple worked for missions in Haiti Inc, an Oklahoma-based organization founded by Mr. Lloyd’s parents.

Ms. Lloyd’s social media posts indicate that the couple married on June 18, 2022, and she began working for the missionary organization in August of the same year.

She frequently posted photos of Haitian children on her Facebook page.

Haiti: Why gangs have taken control

Donald Trump sent his condolences via Truth Social, writing: “God bless Davy and Natalie. Such a tragedy. Haiti is completely out of control. Find the killers NOW!!!”

The shootings occurred against a backdrop of ongoing gang violence in the Haitian capital, which is now 80 percent under gang control.

Authorities in the troubled Caribbean nation are awaiting the arrival of a police force from Kenya, part of a United Nations-backed mission to stem the violence.
