Buffalo back in the lead in the race with Amherst

By 2000, the value of taxable property in Amherst eclipsed that of Buffalo. This was believed to be the first time this had happened and raised questions about the city’s financial health.

By 2015, Amherst’s growth was slowing while Buffalo’s was picking up. In 2021, fueled in part by rising real estate prices, as well as investments in the downtown and waterfront, Buffalo’s tax base grew. The most recent figures put Buffalo’s taxable property value in 2023 at $15.3 billion, compared to Amherst’s $14.5 billion. It’s worth noting, however, that Amherst gets closer every year.8 You can see the full progress on the Investigative First website.
