A Sterling Heights felon is headed back to prison after being convicted in Oakland County of a concealed weapon incident and other crimes.

At a May 21 hearing before Oakland County District Judge Cheryl Matthews, Dean Tyler, 36, was sentenced to 5 to 20 years in prison for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm and 5 to 15 years for assault/resisting/obstructing a police officer in connection with the Dec. 16, 2023, incident at the Commerce Meadows trailer park in Commerce Township.

Tyler had barricaded himself armed in the home of his girlfriend, who called police to report that he was drunk, assaulting her and had access to firearms. Oakland County Sheriff’s officers responded and Tyler reportedly engaged in an 11-hour standoff with police – including the SWAT team – before surrendering. His girlfriend fled to a neighbor’s home, the sheriff’s office said.

Tyler pleaded not guilty to the charges in April and was given credit for 157 days served in prison.

Matthews also sentenced him for drug possession and other offenses related to a July 2023 arrest in Wixom, to which Tyler pleaded guilty in April. The sentences, which must be served concurrently, include 1-20 years for possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine/ecstasy, 1-15 years for possession of a firearm in or on a motor vehicle, and 1-15 years for possession of a firearm by a felon. In addition, Tyler received the mandatory 2-year sentence for a serious firearm offense, which must be served consecutively. He received 174 days of jail credit for those charges at sentencing.

Tyler received an enhanced sentence due to his criminal history, which includes convictions for assault and delivery/manufacture of methamphetamine in Macomb County and ethnic intimidation in Wayne County. His most recent release from the Michigan State Department of Corrections was on December 30, 2021.
