Prosecutor: Police shoot man in New Caledonia after attack by protesters

A police officer in unrest-hit New Caledonia killed a man on Friday after he was attacked by protesters following President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to the French Pacific territory, prosecutors said.

A police officer and his colleague were “physically attacked by a group of about fifteen people” in Dumbéa, just outside the capital Nouméa, forcing him to draw his weapon, prosecutor Yves Dupas said. The total death toll from the unrest that has lasted more than a week now stands at seven.
