Aircraft sent to Charleston due to incident at Georgia airport | Business

An incident that closed the runway at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport on May 6 resulted in several commercial flights along the coast being diverted to Charleston.

According to the Air National Guard’s 165th Airlift Wing, an F-22 Raptor fighter jet participating in an exercise called “Sentry Savannah” was involved in an “aircraft accident” around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The runway was temporarily closed, requiring three flights to be diverted to Charleston International, where officials said the planes taxied until they were cleared to return to Savannah Airport.

None of the aircraft departed or interfered with other flights during the CHS stay.

The F-22 incident remains under investigation. The pilot was not injured, the Air National Guard said in a statement.
