Four dead and 21 injured in Spain after restaurant collapses on Mallorca | News

Investigations are currently underway into the cause of the incident, which occurred at the start of the island’s peak tourist season.

A two-story building collapsed on Spain’s popular tourist island of Mallorca, killing four people and injuring almost two dozen others.

On the social media platform X, emergency services wrote on Thursday that seven of the victims were in a “very serious” condition, nine others had “serious” injuries and were being treated in various hospitals.

The building, which housed a restaurant, collapsed in the Playa de Palma area, south of the Mediterranean island capital of Palma de Mallorca.

A local police spokesman told radio station RNE that the first emergency calls came in around 8 p.m. (6 p.m. GMT).

“The terrace collapsed, probably due to excessive weight,” he said, adding that the cause of the disaster was still under investigation.

The public broadcaster IB3 of the Balearic Islands, where Mallorca is located, reported that people were dancing on a terrace that had collapsed onto the ground below.

‘Nightmarish’

A firefighter described a “nightmarish” scene to the newspaper Ultima Hora. When he arrived, people on the ground floor were crying and screaming around the rubble.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on X and said he was “following the consequences closely”.

The central government is ready to provide regional authorities with “all necessary means” to help them deal with the crisis, he added.

Sanchez said he had spoken to the president of the Balearic Islands region and the mayor of the city.

The President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, told Channel X that she was “shocked” by the news, adding that she was sending “love and warmth to the families of the four people who lost their lives”.

Mallorca is known for its pristine waters and beaches and, according to official figures, more than 14 million tourists visited the islands last year.

Thursday’s collapse occurred at the start of the peak tourist season on a beachfront street lined with shops and entertainment venues.
