Deputy “accidentally” fires gun into ground while approaching suspect

Milwaukee police and the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office were called to Sherman Park Thursday night for a reported fight. When they arrived, three men — two allegedly with a long gun and one with a handgun — were running from the scene. Officers followed them. Two of the suspects were caught and taken into custody. During the chase, a resident reported that the third person was in his yard. While drawing his service weapon to approach the man in the resident’s yard, “a deputy sergeant inadvertently fired his weapon into the ground” near his own foot, the sheriff’s office said. No one was injured when the weapon went off. The suspect had a weapon and was arrested, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy sergeant, who has been with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office for six and a half years, has been placed on administrative duties pending an internal investigation. Milwaukee police were also at the scene assisting law enforcement.

When a deputy sergeant drew his service weapon to approach the man in the resident’s yard, he “accidentally fired a shot into the ground” near his own foot, the sheriff’s office said.

No one was injured when the weapon was fired.

The suspect had a weapon and was arrested, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputy sergeant, who has worked for the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office for six and a half years, has been assigned administrative duties pending the completion of the internal investigation.

Milwaukee police also arrived at the scene and assisted with security measures.
