A severe weather warning has been issued in anticipation of nighttime storm risks

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – Thursday is a 6th First Alert Weather Day before the threat of severe storms overnight. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for portions of the observation area, including the Omaha metro, until 4 a.m. Friday.

After 8 p.m. there may be isolated showers or thunderstorms ahead of the line, but the greatest danger is after midnight when the line passes through.

The storms after 8pm will be very erratic and could produce hail if they develop, but we are primarily relying on the overnight line…be cautious after 11pm! It is the line after midnight that will greatly increase our storm chances if it moves through. The most likely time frame for the metro is 2-4am Friday.

The greatest danger from this line is damaging straight-line winds, but some quick-moving tornadoes are also possible. This line is moving northwest to southeast through the area, attempting to produce wind gusts of up to 75 mph.

The increasing risk of flooding is also a concern. Following our recent series of heavy rains, another 1 to 2.5 inches is possible in many of the same areas. Flood warnings have been issued for the areas most at risk of flooding.

This line should have disappeared slightly by the time you wake up and start your Friday. The rest of Friday will then be calm, cool and a little windy, with highs likely to be 21 degrees.

As we move into Memorial Day weekend, Saturday should be mostly dry and calm, but there is a chance of a storm in the evening hours. The greatest threat for severe weather should remain south of the area this round.
