Rape: Man gets life sentence for raping his stepdaughter | Delhi News

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping and impregnating his minor stepdaughter in 2019. Delivering the verdict in a May 17 verdict, Additional Sessions Court (Pocso) Judge Babita Puniya said, “In the instant case, the diabolical nature of the crime and the fact that the girl was the convict’s stepdaughter and was in his care and protection clearly outweigh the convict’s personal circumstances, including his age. The interest of justice demands that the harshest punishment must be imposed.” “The convict has failed miserably to establish the existence of substantial and compelling reasons for a more lenient interpretation,” it added. The court was hearing a case against the stepfather, who was found guilty of rape and aggravated sexual assault with penetration under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act last month. The court said that in this morally reprehensible incest case, the illiteracy of the convict cannot be considered a mitigating circumstance. “The nature of the crime and the interest of society in protecting defenceless children from horrific experiences warrants a harsh punishment,” it added. Earlier, Special Public Prosecutor Sharawan Kumar Bishnoi had sought the strictest punishment and urged that a clear and resounding message should be sent to the society that such horrific acts will not be tolerated. The court took note of several aggravating circumstances in the case, including that the survivor was an innocent and helpless child who became pregnant and had to undergo an abortion at around 16 years of age. The offence was committed by a stepfather in a position of trust against his innocent and defenceless daughter, it was said. “The convicted person exploited an innocent and defenceless girl to satisfy his lust and selfish needs. He repeatedly made her the object of his desire and impregnated her. I am sure that this must have been an unbearable pain that the child had to endure,” the court said.
