Police shoot dog that attacked students during a sports festival at Lathrop Elementary

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Police shot and killed a dog that had bitten several students during a sports meet at Lathrop Elementary School on Thursday, the school district said in a Facebook post.

Around noon on Thursday, two dogs entered the school grounds while students were participating in sports activities.

The dogs, which were behaving aggressively, bit several students. The district did not say how many students were bitten, but confirmed they were treated and are safe.

Teachers began ushering students inside and police were called.

As the students entered the school, one of the dogs attacked an officer. Another officer shot the dog.

“The students who were bitten have been treated and all other students are safe. However, several children witnessed the dog being shot,” said Dr. Adam Willard, superintendent of the Lathrop School District, in a Facebook post. “We know the entire situation has been traumatic for students and we wanted to make families aware of the matter. We would like to thank our employees for their professionalism and composure during this incident.”
