6 dead, 25 injured in explosion, fire at chemical factory in Thane

Witnesses reported hearing three explosions in the factory.

Several people are feared trapped after a fire broke out at a factory in Thane’s Dombiwali near Mumbai following a massive explosion on Thursday. The fire broke out after a boiler exploded at the chemical plant in MIDC Phase 2, officials said. The massive explosion left six people dead and over 25 injured.

Witnesses reported hearing three explosions at the factory. Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister said at least eight people had been rescued.

“The incident of boiler explosion at Amudan Chemical Company in Dombivli MIDC is tragic. Eight persons involved in this incident have been rescued. Arrangements have been made for treatment of the injured and more ambulances have been kept ready. I have discussed this with the Collector and they will reach the spot within 10 minutes. Teams of NDRF, TDRF and fire brigade have been called,” said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he added.

The force of the explosion created a large crater at the accident site and the pressure waves from the blast damaged neighboring factories and caused windows to shatter.

The pressure wave and heat from the boiler explosion caused heavy iron beams to bend. The roofs of neighboring factories were blown off, causing massive damage. The sound of the explosion was heard from a kilometer away and a Sai temple near the blast site was hit by the blast waves. Several devotees were present at the temple and took part in a ritual. They managed to get to safety.

Some people are reportedly trapped and rescue teams are using drones to locate them.

About 15 fire engines were deployed to extinguish the flames. The extinguishing work is still in progress. Authorities expect it will take over four hours to extinguish the fire.

The force of the explosion shattered the windows of the surrounding houses. The fire has spread to two other buildings, including a car dealership.

An emergency call was made at around 1:40 p.m. According to preliminary information, several vehicles and houses were damaged in the explosion and at least seven people were injured.

“We are waiting for more people to be rescued. Day shift workers were in the factory when the explosion occurred. It is not known how many people are stuck inside,” said Dr. Nikhil Patil.
