Clifton Wellman

Clifton Lamont Wellman, 49, was charged with discharging a weapon into an inhabited property, petty assault with a deadly weapon and petty discharge of a firearm within city limits.

He was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center around 8:30 p.m. after being medically evaluated by Iredell Memorial Hospital staff. A judge ordered Wellman held without bail until his first court appearance.

The suspect was arrested around 6 p.m., less than four hours after a woman said he followed her and her daughter to the parking lot of the National Guard Armory on Hartness Road and fired several shots from a handgun toward her vehicle. According to police, the vehicle was hit by a bullet, but no injuries were reported.

After the incident, Wellman drove to his home at 222 Fieldstone Circle. Officers arrived at the residence within minutes after the victim provided a vehicle description and license plate number.

The SPD SWAT team was activated and officers surrounded the home for approximately three hours before Wellman surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.
