Minneapolis police arrest a man in a hit-and-run at a mosque

A man suspected of hitting another man with his car in the parking lot of a Minnesota mosque in what police believe was a hate crime was arrested Wednesday evening.

At 9:30 p.m., hours after the hit-and-run at the Alhikma Islamic Center, police arrested 37-year-old James Evan Suttles after finding him in his car, according to a news release from the Minneapolis Police Department.

“I am proud of the quick and decisive response of the Minneapolis Police Department,” Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a statement. “Within hours, this suspect was in custody, and that will help put our community at ease. This arrest is a testament to the hard work and determination of our officers and investigators.”

Driver raced toward man in minivan

According to the police report, Just before noon on Wednesday, a 36-year-old man was getting some things out of his car, which was parked in the mosque parking lot in Minneapolis, when a minivan sped toward him. The man ran, but the minivan swerved and struck him, causing him what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled the scene and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

The police are investigating possible hate crimes

The victim is an employee of the Council on American-Islamic Relations chapter in Minnesota. Both police and CAIR believe the incident was a targeted hate crime.

Suttles has a history of “trespassing and erratic behavior at the mosque and in the neighborhood,” police said, and according to CAIR-MN, the suspect has been accused of harassing the mosque and worshipers for the past three years.
