STATESVILLE, NC — One person died in a motorcycle crash in Iredell County Thursday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred around 1:40 a.m. on Interstate 77 near mile marker 56.

Police said a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling north on I-77, failed to reduce speed and collided with a northbound 1998 International box truck.

The driver of the motorcycle, 35-year-old Dustin Kyle Pope, was ejected from the motorcycle before dying at the scene.

The driver of the van was not injured.

Initial investigations indicate that excessive speed was responsible for the collision.
